Why multiple sizes in one file?
Windows and browsers pick different sizes for tabs, taskbar, desktop and file explorer — a multi-size ICO covers all of them with one request.
Do I need exactly 16/32/48?
That set covers browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts. Modern sites often also ship PNG icons plus a manifest.
Will transparency survive?
