How to convert mp4 to gif

  1. Pick your video

Select an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV clip (up to 500 MB).

  2. Convert to GIF

Frames are sampled at 10 fps, scaled to at most 480 px wide, and quantized to a 256-color GIF palette.

TipOnly the first 30 seconds are converted — perfect for loops and reaction clips.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the video be?

The first 30 seconds are converted. GIFs grow very large quickly, so longer clips are better shared as MP4 (use the GIF to MP4 tool in reverse).

Why is the GIF wider than 480 px sometimes smaller?

It usually is not — GIF is an old format with per-frame palettes. The converter caps width at 480 px and samples 10 fps to keep files reasonable.

Which browsers can run this?

Any browser with WebCodecs video decoding — recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

Is my video uploaded?

Conversion happens in your browser with WebAssembly — your file never leaves your device, so nothing is uploaded or stored.
